Bezalel, 'in the shadow of God,' the master craftsman of the Tabernacle; also a post-exilic Israelite.
A theophoric name meaning 'in the shadow (protection) of God,' borne primarily by the divinely appointed chief artisan of the Tabernacle. God filled Bezalel son of Uri with the Spirit, granting him extraordinary skill in metalwork, stonecutting, and woodcarving to construct the sacred furnishings (Exod 31:2; 35:30; 36:1-2). He is credited with building the Ark itself (Exod 37:1) and overseeing all Tabernacle construction (Exod 38:22). A second Bezalel appears among those who had taken foreign wives in Ezra's reform (Ezra 10:30). Spanish 'Betsalel/Betzalel' and French 'Betsaleel' reflect the original's phonology.

Senses
1. Bezalel (proper name) Bezalel — a theophoric proper name (בְּצַלְאֵל, 'in the shadow/protection of El') designating primarily the master craftsman of the Tabernacle, of the tribe of Judah. God filled him with his Spirit in wisdom, understanding, and skill (Exod 31:2-5; 35:30-35) to execute the elaborate construction of the Tabernacle furnishings, including the Ark of the Covenant (Exod 37:1). He appears also in the Chronicler's genealogy (1 Chr 2:20) and at the altar reference (2 Chr 1:5). A second, minor Bezalel is named among those who put away foreign wives (Ezra 10:30). Spanish 'Betsalel' and French 'Betsaleel' faithfully render the theophoric compound.
