Baasha; king of Israel (c. 909-886 BC) who overthrew Jeroboam's dynasty and warred with Judah.
Baasha son of Ahijah, of the tribe of Issachar, seized the throne of the northern kingdom by assassinating Nadab son of Jeroboam and exterminating the entire house of Jeroboam (1 Kgs 15:27-30). His reign is narrated principally in 1 Kings 15-16, where he fortifies Ramah against Judah, prompting King Asa to enlist Aramean help (1 Kgs 15:16-22). The Deuteronomistic historian judges him harshly, and the prophet Jehu son of Hanani pronounces doom on his house (1 Kgs 16:1-4). His name appears also in 2 Chronicles 16 and is referenced in Jeremiah 41:9.
