be brutish, be stupid, be dull-hearted; graze, let graze, consume by grazing
1. be brutish, be stupid, be dull-hearted — Qal and Niphal denominative from בְּעִיר 'beast, cattle': to be brutish, stupid, dull-hearted, or unreceptive, i.e., to behave like an irrational animal rather than a thinking human. Used in prophetic and wisdom literature to rebuke idolaters and the spiritually obtuse. The Qal participle בֹּעֲרִים 'brutish ones' appears in Ps 94:8 and Ezek 21:31 as a vocative rebuke. The Niphal forms (נִבְעַר, נִבְעָרָה, נִבְעֲרוּ) occur in Jer 10:8, 14, 21; 51:17 and Isa 19:11, describing those who are stupefied, especially idolaters. Glosses uniformly show the semantic of animal-like stupidity: arb بَلِهَ/بَلِيد 'foolish/stupid,' kor 어리석다, spa necios/embrutecido, hin पशु समान 'beast-like.' 7×

2. graze, let graze, consume by grazing — Hiphil and Piel causative sense: to let graze, to send livestock to feed in another's field, or to consume vegetation by grazing. Attested in the Covenant Code (Exod 22:5), where יַבְעֶר 'lets graze' (Hiphil jussive) and וּבִעֵר 'and it grazes' (Piel) describe allowing one's livestock to feed in another person's field or vineyard, creating liability for crop damage. This sense derives from the same root association with cattle (בְּעִיר) but denotes the literal activity of animals feeding rather than the metaphorical 'behaving like a beast.' Glosses: arb رَعى 'graze,' eng 'lets graze / it grazes,' spa 'haga pastar / pace,' hin चराए 'let graze.' A distinct agricultural-legal sense. 2×
