Benjaminite — a member of the tribe of Benjamin, Israel's smallest tribe from which Saul and other notable figures arose
The compound gentilic בֶּן־יְמִינִי (ben-yemini) identifies a person as belonging to the tribe of Benjamin, literally 'son of the right hand' or 'son of the south.' It appears at pivotal narrative moments: Ehud the left-handed judge who assassinated Moab's king Eglon was a Benjaminite (Judg 3:15), as was the unnamed Levite's host at Gibeah (Judg 19:16). Saul introduces himself as 'a Benjaminite, from the smallest of the tribes of Israel' (1 Sam 9:21). Shimei, who cursed David during Absalom's revolt, is identified as 'Shimei son of Gera, a Benjaminite' (2 Sam 16:11; 19:16; 1 Kgs 2:8). The designation carries the tribe's complex reputation — fierce warriors yet nearly annihilated in the civil war of Judges 19-21.
Senses
1. Benjaminite (gentilic name) — A tribal designation identifying a member of the tribe of Benjamin ('son of the right hand'). Applied to Ehud the left-handed judge and deliverer from Moabite oppression (Judg 3:15), to the old man of Gibeah who hosted the Levite (Judg 19:16), to Saul who humbly notes Benjamin's smallness (1 Sam 9:21; 22:7), and to Shimei ben Gera who cursed David during Absalom's rebellion (2 Sam 16:11; 19:16; 1 Kgs 2:8). Mordecai in Esther (Est 2:5) and Paul in the New Testament (Phil 3:5) both claim this identity. Spanish 'benjaminita' and English 'Benjaminite' are the standard renderings. 11×
