Ben-Hadad; throne name of Aramean (Syrian) kings meaning 'son of (the god) Hadad,' borne by at least three rulers of Damascus
Ben-Hadad (בֶּן־הֲדַד, 'son of [the god] Hadad') is a throne name or dynastic title borne by at least three kings of Aram-Damascus who feature prominently in the history of the divided monarchy. Ben-Hadad I allied with Asa of Judah against Baasha of Israel (1 Kgs 15:18–20). Ben-Hadad II was the great antagonist of Ahab and Elisha, besieging Samaria and waging multiple campaigns (1 Kgs 20; 2 Kgs 6:24; 8:7–9). Ben-Hadad III, son of Hazael, was defeated by Jehoash of Israel, who recovered lost cities (2 Kgs 13:3, 24–25). Amos 1:4 prophesies fire upon 'the palaces of Ben-Hadad,' using the name as shorthand for Aramean royal power.
