בָּלָק H1111
Balak — king of Moab who hired Balaam to curse Israel during the wilderness period
A Moabite royal name meaning 'devastator' or 'one who lays waste.' Balak son of Zippor ruled Moab when Israel camped on the plains east of the Jordan after the exodus. Alarmed by Israel's defeat of the Amorites, he summoned the diviner Balaam to pronounce a curse, only to hear blessings instead (Numbers 22-24). Later biblical writers recall his failed plot as a paradigm of God's sovereign protection of his people (Josh 24:9; Judg 11:25; Mic 6:5).
