N-proper-ms  |  6× in 1 sense
Bigvai, a personal name borne by a leader among the returning exiles in the time of Zerubbabel and Nehemiah.
A proper name carried by at least one prominent figure in the post-exilic period. Bigvai was among the leaders who returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:2; Neh 7:7) and gave his name to a large family: 2,056 descendants in one census (Ezra 2:14) and 2,067 in the parallel list (Neh 7:19). A second group from his family returned with Ezra (Ezra 8:14). A Bigvai also appears as a signatory to Nehemiah's covenant (Neh 10:17). The name may derive from Sanskrit bhagavan ('fortunate'). French 'Bigvai' and English 'Bigvai' preserve the Hebrew transliteration faithfully.

Senses
1. sense 1 The personal name Bigvai, identifying a clan leader among the returning exiles. He accompanied Zerubbabel on the initial return from Babylon (Ezra 2:2; Neh 7:7), and his descendants formed one of the larger family groups in the restored community (Ezra 2:14; Neh 7:19), with a further contingent arriving under Ezra (Ezra 8:14). A Bigvai also sealed Nehemiah's covenant (Neh 10:17). The name's possible Sanskrit etymology (bhagavan, 'blessed') suggests a diaspora naming influence. English and French transliterate uniformly as 'Bigvai.'
