well, cistern (dug water source); pit (of destruction or moral danger)
Senses
1. well, cistern (dug water source) — A shaft dug into the ground to access water (or other substance such as bitumen); the primary literal sense covering wells at which patriarchs meet, watering wells for flocks, and wells as sources of living water. Includes Gen 14:10 bitumen pits (same physical structure) and figurative-at-sentence-level uses in Prov 5:15 and Song 4:15 where the word itself retains its literal meaning. 35×

2. pit (of destruction or moral danger) — Figurative extension: a deep shaft understood as a trap or place of death. In Ps 55:23 (בְּאֵר שַׁחַת, 'pit of destruction') and Ps 69:15 ('let not the pit close its mouth over me') the referent is Sheol or death. In Prov 23:27 ('a narrow pit is a foreign woman') the image is of a moral trap. The word no longer denotes a literal water source but a metaphorical abyss. 2×
