Ashqelon -- one of the five major Philistine cities, on the Mediterranean coast of Canaan
Ashkelon (Hebrew אַשְׁקְלוֹן) was one of the five principal cities of the Philistine pentapolis, situated on the Mediterranean coast of Canaan (modern Ashkelon, Israel). It appears in contexts of conquest, judgment, and lament throughout the Hebrew Bible. Judah captured it during the initial settlement of Canaan (Judg 1:18). Samson struck down thirty men of Ashkelon (Judg 14:19). David's lament over Saul and Jonathan warns, 'Tell it not in Gath, proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon' (2 Sam 1:20). The prophets pronounce oracles of destruction against it as part of God's judgment on Philistia (Jer 25:20; 47:5, 7; Amos 1:8; Zeph 2:4, 7; Zech 9:5). All twelve occurrences refer to the same coastal city.
