viper, adder (venomous serpent)
A venomous snake, most likely a viper or adder, named perhaps for its hissing sound. Isaiah uses the term in prophecies of judgment and danger, depicting viper eggs and the deadly nature of wickedness. Job employs it in Bildad's warning that the wicked person will 'suck the poison of vipers' and be killed by the viper's tongue. The serpent embodies lethal danger lurking in seemingly safe places, a natural metaphor for sin's deceptive and deadly nature.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Job 20:16 warns that the wicked 'will suck the poison of vipers; the tongue of a viper will kill him'—wealth gained by wickedness becomes internal poison. Isaiah 30:6 includes 'viper and flying serpent' in the catalog of desert dangers through which envoys must travel to Egypt. Isaiah 59:5 accuses the wicked of hatching 'viper's eggs'—whoever eats them dies, and when crushed they release more vipers, illustrating how evil reproduces and spreads death. The viper's hidden strike and deadly venom made it an apt symbol for sin's treachery. 3×
