Esther -- the Jewish queen of Persia, heroine of the book bearing her name, also known as Hadassah
Esther (possibly from Old Persian stara, 'star,' or connected to the goddess Ishtar) is the proper name of the Jewish woman who became queen of Persia under Ahasuerus. Born Hadassah ('myrtle'), she was an orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai of the tribe of Benjamin. All 55 occurrences are confined to the Book of Esther, where she courageously risks her life to save the Jewish people from Haman's decree. The arc from her selection as queen (Esth 2:17) through 'if I perish, I perish' (Esth 4:16) to her triumph makes her one of the Hebrew Bible's most celebrated heroines.

Senses
1. Esther (proper name) The Jewish queen of Persia who saved her people from Haman's genocidal plot. Her name may derive from Persian 'star' or the goddess Ishtar; her Hebrew name Hadassah means 'myrtle' (Esth 2:7). All 55 occurrences fall within the Book of Esther, from queenship (Esth 2:17) through courageous intervention (Esth 4:16). Spanish Ester, French and German Esther preserve the name uniformly. 55×
