Asaph ('gatherer') is one of the three master musicians appointed by David alongside Heman and Jeduthun (Ethan), and his name echoes through 46 occurrences spanning Chronicles, Ezra-Nehemiah, Kings, Isaiah, and the Psalter. He is called both 'the singer' (ha-meshorer, 1 Chr 6:24) and 'the seer' (ha-khozeh, 2 Chr 29:30), suggesting his musical role carried prophetic weight — indeed, 1 Chronicles 25:2 says he 'prophesied under the direction of the king.' Twelve psalms bear his name as superscription (Ps 50, 73-83), forming a theologically distinctive collection marked by theodicy, divine judgment, and the fate of the wicked. His descendants remained active through the post-exilic period: 'the sons of Asaph' appear among the returning exiles (Ezra 2:41) and at the dedication of the rebuilt wall (Neh 12:35).
