The name אָסָא (Asa, perhaps meaning 'healer') refers primarily to the third king of the southern kingdom of Judah (r. c. 910–869 BCE), son of Abijam and father of Jehoshaphat. Asa is remembered for sweeping religious reforms: removing idols, deposing his grandmother Maacah for her Asherah pole (1 Kgs 15:13; 2 Chr 15:16), and calling Judah back to covenant faithfulness. Yet his later years saw a troubled alliance with Aram against northern Israel (1 Kgs 15:18-20) and reliance on physicians rather than the Lord in his final illness (2 Chr 16:12). A second, minor Asa appears as a Levite in 1 Chronicles 9:16.
