Amen; a solemn affirmation of truth, agreement, or doxological praise—'truly,' 'so be it,' 'let it stand.'
One of the most enduring words in all of Scripture, amen functions as a solemn ratifier. In the covenant curses of Deuteronomy 27:15-26, the people respond 'Amen' twelve times to bind themselves to the law. In the Psalter's doxologies (Ps 41:13, 72:19, 89:52, 106:48), the doubled 'Amen and Amen' seals praise to God. Nehemiah 5:13 records the assembly's 'Amen' confirming Nehemiah's oath. Isaiah 65:16 even names God 'the God of Amen'—the God of faithfulness. The word passed unchanged into Greek, Latin, and virtually every language the Bible has reached, as confirmed by its identical transliteration across all our target languages.
Senses
1. Amen — A liturgical and covenantal affirmation meaning 'truly,' 'so be it,' or 'it is established.' In Deuteronomy 27:15-26, the congregation ratifies each covenant curse with 'Amen,' accepting its binding force. In the Psalter doxologies (Ps 41:13, 72:19, 89:52, 106:48), doubled 'Amen, Amen' closes each book of the Psalms with emphatic praise. Numbers 5:22 uses the double Amen in the oath of the suspected adulteress. The word itself derives from the root 'mn, connoting firmness and reliability—hence Isaiah 65:16's remarkable epithet 'God of Amen.' 30×
