Amon — proper name meaning 'master workman' or 'trustworthy,' borne by a king of Judah and others
A proper name whose etymology is debated — possibly 'master workman' (from 'aman, to be firm) or connected to the Egyptian deity Amun. The most prominent bearer is King Amon of Judah, son of Manasseh, whose brief and wicked two-year reign ended in assassination by his own servants (2 Kgs 21:18-26; 2 Chr 33:20-25). He also appears in prophetic dating formulas (Jer 1:2; 25:3). A second Amon is the governor of Samaria to whom the prophet Micaiah was sent (1 Kgs 22:26). A third belongs to the line of Solomon's servants returning from exile (Neh 7:59).
Senses
1. sense 1 — The proper name Amon (אָמוֹן), applied to three distinct figures: primarily the idolatrous king of Judah who continued his father Manasseh's sins and was assassinated (2 Kgs 21:19-26), also a city governor in Ahab's time (1 Kgs 22:26), and an ancestor of post-exilic returnees (Neh 7:59). Cross-linguistic renderings are stable (eng: Amon, spa: Amón, fra: Amon, deu: Amon). The name's 13 occurrences for the king cluster in Kings-Chronicles and Jeremiah's superscriptions. 17×
