Elkanah ('God has acquired'); name of several OT figures, most notably the father of the prophet Samuel.
Elkanah (אֶלְקָנָה, 'God has created' or 'God has acquired') is best known as the devout Ephraimite from Ramathaim who became father of the prophet Samuel. His tender love for the barren Hannah — 'Am I not better to you than ten sons?' (1 Sam 1:8) — sets the stage for one of Scripture's most poignant prayer narratives. The name also appears for a son of Korah (Exod 6:24), several Levites in the genealogies of Chronicles, a warrior who joined David at Ziklag (1 Chr 12:6), and a court official slain during Ahaz's reign (2 Chr 28:7). Spanish 'Elcana', French 'Elkana', and German 'Elkana' all preserve the name's phonetic shape faithfully.

Senses
1. Elkanah (proper name) A theophoric proper name meaning 'God has acquired/created,' referring to several biblical individuals. The most prominent Elkanah is Samuel's father, whose compassion for barren Hannah and faithful worship at Shiloh frame the birth narrative of Israel's last judge (1 Sam 1:1-2:11). Other bearers include a Korahite (Exod 6:24), multiple Levites in Chronicler genealogies, and a court official killed under Ahaz (2 Chr 28:7). Transliterated consistently as 'Elkanah/Elkana' across English, Spanish, French, and German. 21×
