Elnathan ('God has given'), a proper name for Jehoiakim's grandfather and Levites in Ezra's time.
A masculine proper name meaning 'God has given,' the mirror-image of Nethanel ('given of God'). The most prominent Elnathan is the son of Achbor, grandfather of King Jehoiakim (2 Kgs 24:8), who appears in Jeremiah as a court official sent to retrieve the prophet Uriah from Egypt (Jer 26:22) and as one present at the reading of Jeremiah's scroll (Jer 36:12, 25). Three men named Elnathan are also listed among the leaders Ezra summoned before the return from Babylon (Ezra 8:16). The theophoric name has Akkadian, Phoenician, and Palmyrene parallels, underscoring its wide Semitic currency.

Senses
1. Elnathan (proper name) The proper name Elnathan ('God has given'), identifying two or more individuals: (a) Elnathan son of Achbor, a Judean official and grandfather of King Jehoiakim (2 Kgs 24:8), who was sent to extradite Uriah from Egypt (Jer 26:22) and was present at the burning of Jeremiah's scroll (Jer 36:12, 25); (b) three leaders (possibly Levites) whom Ezra summoned at the river Ahava before the return to Jerusalem (Ezra 8:16). Cognate theophoric names in Akkadian (Ilu-iddin) and Phoenician confirm the pan-Semitic pattern.
