Elijah (Eliyyahu, 'my God is Yahweh') is one of the towering figures of the Hebrew Bible, a prophet from Tishbe in Gilead who confronted the Baal cult under Ahab and Jezebel (1 Kgs 17-19), called down fire on Mount Carmel, and was taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire (2 Kgs 2:11). His 71 occurrences span Kings and Chronicles, with a cameo in Malachi 3:23 as the forerunner of the Day of the Lord. Three lesser-known bearers also appear: a Benjamite (1 Chr 8:27) and two men in Ezra's time. Spanish Elias, French Elie, and German Elia reflect the same Semitic theophoric name.
