and Accad, city name in Babylonia
One of four cities constituting Nimrod's kingdom in Genesis 10:10, alongside Babel, Erech, and Calneh in the land of Shinar. Accad corresponds to the Babylonian Akkadi, mostly known as a land or district but also a city. Its precise location remains uncertain; it may be the city of Sargon I (Agade/Agane). This was the heartland of the Akkadian empire, giving its name to the Akkadian language and culture.

Senses
1. sense 1 Ancient Mesopotamian city in Nimrod's primeval kingdom, representing early post-Flood urbanization and imperial power. Genesis 10:10 lists it with Babel and other foundational cities in Shinar (southern Mesopotamia). The name survives in Akkadian, the great Semitic language that dominated cuneiform literature. Multilingual glosses (Accad, Akad, Akkad) show slight orthographic variation but maintain the historical-geographical referent to this cradle of Mesopotamian civilization.
