V-Qal-Imperf-3fs  |  1× in 1 sense
shut, close (of a well or pit)
This rare verb appears only in Psalm 69:15, where the psalmist pleads that the mouth of the pit not close over him. The imagery evokes being swallowed alive by the earth or death itself. The Arabic cognate suggests bending or enclosing, which fits the visual picture of a well's opening shutting like a trap. The multilingual evidence (shut-, close-, fermer) confirms the spatial sense of enclosure.

Senses
1. sense 1 Used metaphorically of death or the grave closing over someone like the mouth of a pit shutting. The psalmist's plea in Psalm 69:15 draws on ancient Near Eastern imagery of Sheol as a devouring entity with gaping jaws. Cross-linguistic glosses emphasize the finality of closure, with Spanish cierre- and French fermer both carrying connotations of sealing off or trapping.
