אֲחַזְיָ֫הוּ, H0274
Ahaziah — Hebrew name meaning 'Yah has grasped,' borne by a king of Israel and a king of Judah
Achazyahu (also vocalized Achazyah) is a theophoric name combining achaz ('to seize, grasp') with Yahu/Yah, yielding 'Yah has grasped' or 'Yah has taken hold.' The name belongs to two kings whose reigns ended in divine judgment. Ahaziah son of Ahab, king of Israel, fell through an upper-chamber lattice and sent to inquire of Baal-zebub, god of Ekron, provoking Elijah's devastating oracle: 'Is it because there is no God in Israel?' (2 Kgs 1:3, 6, 16). He died childless after a two-year reign (1 Kgs 22:51; 2 Kgs 1:17-18). Ahaziah son of Jehoram, king of Judah, reigned only one year before Jehu killed him at the ascent of Gur during the bloody purge of Ahab's house (2 Kgs 9:27-28). The LXX renders both as Ochozias, and the Spanish 'Ocozias' and French 'Achazia' follow suit. A third bearer, the priest Achzai (Neh 11:13), carries a shortened form of the same name.

1. Ahaziah (proper name) — The theophoric proper name Achazyahu/Achazyah ('Yah has grasped'), identifying primarily two Israelite kings. Ahaziah son of Ahab ruled Israel briefly (c. 853-852 BC), fell through his upper-room lattice, and died after consulting Baal-zebub instead of YHWH (1 Kgs 22:40, 49, 51; 2 Kgs 1:2-18). Ahaziah son of Jehoram of Judah reigned one year before being killed by Jehu alongside the house of Ahab (2 Kgs 8:24-29; 9:16-29; 2 Chr 22:1-9). The LXX Ochozias, Spanish 'Ocozias,' and French 'Achazia' uniformly transliterate. A shortened form Achzai identifies a postexilic priest in Nehemiah 11:13. 37×
