1. Ahaz king of Judah — The personal name Ahaz (meaning 'he has grasped,' abbreviated from Jehoahaz), referring to the king of Judah (c. 735-715 BCE), son of Jotham and father of Hezekiah. The bulk of occurrences appear in 2 Kings 15:38-16:20 narrating his reign, his appeal to Tiglath-pileser of Assyria, and his altar modifications. Also referenced in Isaiah 1:1; 7:1-12; 38:8 (the sundial of Ahaz) and in the Chronicles genealogies (1 Chr 8:35-36; 9:42).
