H0155 H0155
A large outer robe, mantle, or cloak; figuratively glory, majesty, or splendor.
Best known as the prophet's mantle -- the garment Elijah wore and cast upon Elisha as a sign of succession (1 Kings 19:19), and that parted the Jordan when struck against the water (2 Kings 2:8, 14). The word also names the costly Babylonian robe that tempted Achan at Jericho (Josh 7:21). German 'Kleid' and Spanish 'manto' faithfully render the concrete garment. In prophetic poetry, however, the same word shifts to abstract splendor: the vine in Ezekiel 17:8 bears 'magnificent' branches, and Zechariah 11:3 laments the loss of the shepherds' 'glory,' where garment and grandeur merge.
Senses
1. robe, mantle, cloak — A large, impressive outer garment -- a robe, mantle, or cloak. Esau's hairy body at birth is likened to a 'mantle of hair' (Gen 25:25). Achan coveted a fine Babylonian adderet (Josh 7:21, 24). Most memorably, it is Elijah's prophetic mantle, wrapped around his face before God at Horeb (1 Kings 19:13), cast upon Elisha (1 Kings 19:19), and used to strike the Jordan (2 Kings 2:8, 13, 14). Zechariah 13:4 notes that false prophets will no longer don the 'hairy mantle' to deceive. German 'Kleid,' Spanish 'manto,' and French 'robe' all render this as a dignified outer garment. 10×

2. glory, majesty, splendor — An abstract sense of glory, majesty, or magnificence, extending from the imposing appearance of the physical garment. Ezekiel 17:8 describes a vine planted in good soil producing branches of 'splendor' (adderet), where most translations shift from clothing to botanical magnificence. Zechariah 11:3 speaks of the shepherds' 'glory' being ruined -- possibly still punning on the shepherd's cloak but clearly carrying overtones of lost grandeur. Spanish 'majestad' and 'esplendida' capture this abstract register well. 2×
