Abram ('exalted father') appears in Genesis 11:26 through 17:5, after which God renames him Abraham. The name change marks the covenant of circumcision and the promise of multitudinous descendants (Gen 17:5). Despite being two forms of one name, the biblical text treats them as a single continuous identity — the patriarch who left Ur, received the land promise, fathered Ishmael and Isaac, and became the spiritual ancestor claimed by Judaism, Christianity, and Islam alike. Nehemiah 9:7 and 1 Chronicles 1:27 preserve the original 'Abram' form outside Genesis. Spanish Avraham and German Abraham show how universally recognized this name remains.
