χρεωφειλ-έτης G5533
debtor, one who owes money or goods
χρεωφειλέτης (from χρέος 'debt' + ὀφείλω 'owe') denotes someone who owes a debt, a debtor. Jesus uses it twice in parables about forgiveness. In Luke 7:41, he tells Simon the Pharisee: 'A certain moneylender had two debtors (χρεωφειλέται). One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty'—setting up a story about differing magnitudes of debt and forgiveness. In Luke 16:5, the unjust steward calls his master's debtors (χρεοφειλετῶν) and reduces their bills, trying to secure future favors. Both contexts use financial debt to illustrate spiritual or relational realities.
Sentidos
1. sense 1 — Both uses appear in Jesus' parables employing financial debt as metaphor. Luke 7:41 uses χρεωφειλέται in a story about forgiveness—the one forgiven more loves more. Luke 16:5 uses it in a story about shrewd use of resources. The French débiteur and Spanish deudores straightforwardly mean 'debtors.' Jesus regularly uses debt imagery to teach about sin, forgiveness, and accountability—we are all debtors before God, differing only in the magnitude of what we owe and have been forgiven. 2×
