Choros refers to dancing, particularly the kind of group or choral dance that accompanied celebrations in the ancient world. Jesus uses it in the parable of the prodigal son: when the older brother returns from the field and hears 'music and dancing,' he learns that his wayward brother has returned and the father has thrown a celebration. The dancing signifies unrestrained joy and festivity—exactly what offends the self-righteous older brother, who thinks his father's mercy is excessive. In classical Greek, choros could mean both the dance itself and the group of dancers, often in religious or dramatic contexts.
