χολ-άω G5520
to be angry, to rage, to be filled with wrath
Cholaō means to be angry or enraged, often with the connotation of bile-driven anger (from cholē, bile). Jesus uses it in John's Gospel when defending his Sabbath healing: 'I did one work, and you all marvel at it. Moses gave you circumcision... and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision... are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man's whole body well?' The rhetorical question exposes the inconsistency of his opponents: they permit surgical circumcision on the Sabbath but rage when Jesus heals, revealing that their anger comes from hostility to Jesus rather than from principled Sabbath observance.

1. sense 1 — To be angry, to rage. Jesus addresses the Jerusalem authorities in John 7:23: 'If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry (cholaō) with me because I made a man's whole body well on the Sabbath?' The multilingual glosses—Spanish 'os enfurecéis,' French 'être irrité,' German 'zürnen,' English 'are you angry'—all convey anger or wrath. Jesus's question exposes the irrationality of opposing his Sabbath healing while permitting Sabbath circumcision, revealing their anger as prejudice rather than principle. 1×
