choenix, a dry measure equal to about a quart (roughly one person's daily grain ration)
χοῖνιξ was a Greek dry measure used particularly for grain, equivalent to about one quart or roughly one liter—the typical daily bread ration for one person. It appears only in Revelation 6:6, in John's vision of the third seal judgment. The voice announces: 'A quart (χοῖνιξ) of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts (τρεῖς χοίνικες) of barley for a denarius'—depicting severe famine conditions where a full day's wage buys only enough grain for one person's basic subsistence. This is economic devastation: no surplus, nothing for family, nothing for any other needs. The χοῖνιξ becomes a unit measuring scarcity and judgment.

Senses
1. sense 1 Both occurrences appear in the same verse (Revelation 6:6), where χοῖνιξ measures famine severity during the apocalyptic tribulation. A denarius for a χοῖνιξ means starvation-level economics—working all day for just enough grain to survive one more day. The German Choinix and French transliterations preserve the technical term. John's vision depicts judgment as economic collapse, where the basic measure of daily bread becomes the measure of suffering.
