Cheiragogos literally means 'one who leads by the hand' and refers to a guide, especially one who leads a blind person or someone who cannot find their way. Luke uses it when describing Saul's condition after his encounter with the risen Christ on the Damascus road: blinded by the light, 'those who were with him led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus.' Later, when Saul (now Paul) recounts being struck blind by Elymas the sorcerer's opposition, he declares 'you will be blind and unable to see the sun for a time,' requiring 'guides to lead him by the hand.' The word captures both physical helplessness and the need for assistance.
