to bestow grace upon, favor highly, show grace to someone
χαριτόω means to grace someone, to bestow favor or grace upon them, derived from χάρις ('grace'). Gabriel uses the perfect passive participle in Luke 1:28, greeting Mary as 'favored one' (κεχαριτωμένη)—she has been graced, highly favored by God, chosen to bear the Messiah. Paul uses the aorist active in Ephesians 1:6, celebrating God's glorious grace 'which he has freely bestowed on us (ἧς ἐχαρίτωσεν ἡμᾶς) in the Beloved'—God has graced believers in Christ. Both uses emphasize divine initiative: God is the one who bestows this grace, making the recipients objects of his generous favor.

Sentidos
1. sense 1 The two uses show χαριτόω as God's gracious action toward his chosen ones. Mary was graced to be Theotokos (God-bearer); all believers are graced in Christ. The French favorisée and Spanish agraciada capture the sense of being recipients of favor. This isn't grace as abstract concept but grace as active divine favor—God choosing to bestow blessing on particular persons for particular purposes. Mary's grace led to incarnation; believers' grace leads to adoption and redemption.
