φρυγία G5435
Phrygia, a large inland region in central Asia Minor
Phrygia was a vast territory in central and western Asia Minor (modern Turkey), known for its agricultural wealth and mixed population of indigenous Phrygians, Greeks, and Jews. Major cities included Laodicea, Colossae, and Hierapolis. The region's boundaries shifted over time, and in the Roman period it was divided among different provinces. Acts mentions Phrygia as part of Paul's missionary travels, particularly his strengthening of existing disciples. The presence of Phrygians at Pentecost (Acts 2:10) indicates an established Jewish diaspora community there.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Acts 2:10 lists Phrygians among the devout Jews and proselytes present at Pentecost hearing the gospel in their own languages—early exposure to Christianity. Acts 16:6 describes Paul and his companions passing through the Phrygian and Galatian region after being prevented from entering Asia—the Spirit redirecting their mission. Acts 18:23 narrates Paul traveling sequentially through the Galatian region and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples—pastoral follow-up after initial evangelism. The Spanish Frigia/Phrygía, French Phrygie, and German retention of Greek form show transliteration. Phrygia appears not as a primary mission field but as a region Paul passed through, strengthening existing believers—important interior territory connecting the Aegean coast with central Anatolia in the expanding Christian movement. 3×
