φραγέλλ-ιον G5416
Whip, scourge, a multi-corded instrument for beating or driving
John 2:15 provides the New Testament's sole use: Jesus made a φραγέλλιον of cords and drove animals from the temple. The Greek borrows directly from Latin flagellum (whip, scourge), the same term used for instruments of judicial punishment. Whether Jesus used it on the money-changers or only the animals, the text specifies animals. The image shocks: gentle Jesus makes a whip. Yet zeal for his Father's house consumed him, and sometimes love acts violently against what corrupts holy space. The mundane object—twisted cords—becomes an instrument of prophetic disruption.
