Phoenicia, a coastal region north of Palestine along the eastern Mediterranean
Phoenicia was the ancient name for the coastal strip of modern-day Lebanon and northern Israel, home to seafaring peoples famous for commerce, purple dye, and alphabet development. Major cities included Tyre and Sidon. Though predominantly Gentile, the region had historical connections to Israel and appears in Jesus' ministry (the Syrophoenician woman). In Acts, Phoenicia becomes significant in the early church's geographic expansion as believers scattered by persecution carry the gospel north along the coast, extending the mission beyond Jerusalem and Judea.

Senses
1. sense 1 Acts 11:19 traces believers scattered by Stephen's persecution traveling as far as "Phoenicia" (Phoinikēn), Cyprus, and Antioch, initially preaching only to Jews. Acts 15:3 describes Paul and Barnabas passing through "Phoenicia" (Phoinikēs) on their way to the Jerusalem council, reporting Gentile conversions and causing great joy among believers. Acts 21:2 mentions Paul finding a ship crossing to "Phoenicia" (Phoinikēn) on his final journey to Jerusalem. The Spanish Fenicia/Phoiniêkē/Phoiníkē, French Phoiniké, and German retention of Greek forms show transliteration of the place name. Phoenicia serves as a geographic marker in the expanding missionary movement, a Gentile territory increasingly populated with believers as the gospel spreads northward from Judea.
