Philippi, a major Roman colony in Macedonia; site of Paul's first European church.
The name of a prominent city in the Roman province of Macedonia, originally called Krenides and renamed by Philip II of Macedon. As a Roman colony it held the special civic status of ius Italicum. Paul founded his first European congregation there after his vision of the man from Macedonia (Acts 16:12), and his letter to the Philippians remains one of the most personal and joyful epistles. The plural form Philippoi reflects a common Greek convention for city names.
