φῐλανθρωπ-ία G5363
love for humanity, kindness, benevolence, humane treatment
φιλανθρωπία captures the quality of kindness and consideration shown to fellow human beings, what we might call humanitarian concern or simple human decency. In Acts 28:2, Luke uses it to describe the 'unusual kindness' (φιλανθρωπίαν οὐ τὴν τυχοῦσαν) shown by the Maltese islanders to Paul's shipwrecked party—they built a fire for the rain-soaked strangers and welcomed them. In Titus 3:4, Paul uses it theologically to describe God's own φιλανθρωπία—his saving kindness toward humanity that appeared in Christ, demonstrating that divine love takes the form of generous, merciful action toward people.
Sentidos
1. sense 1 — The two New Testament uses show φιλανθρωπία operating on both human and divine levels. The Maltese showed it through practical hospitality to strangers; God showed it through the incarnation. The German Menschenfreundlichkeit ('friendliness to humans') and Spanish amor a la humanidad capture the essence well—this is kindness rooted in recognition of shared humanity, whether practiced by islanders or by God himself entering human flesh. 2×
