Pablo contrasta φθαρτός de manera tajante con lo imperecedero (ἄφθαρτος) en 1 Corintios 15:53-54, donde los cuerpos mortales deben 'revestirse' de incorrupción. En Romanos 1:23 expone lo absurdo de cambiar la gloria del Dios inmortal por imágenes de criaturas perecederas.
