Festus — Porcius Festus, the Roman procurator of Judea who succeeded Felix
Phestos (Porcius Festus) appears 13 times in the latter chapters of Acts, all within the narrative of Paul's legal proceedings in Caesarea. Festus succeeded Felix as procurator of Judea around AD 59 and inherited Paul's case. Luke portrays him as a more competent administrator than his predecessor, yet still politically entangled — willing to use Paul as a diplomatic gesture toward the Jewish leadership (Acts 25:9). His dramatic exchange with Paul ('You are out of your mind, Paul!' Acts 26:24) provides one of the most memorable courtroom moments in the New Testament. The name is consistently transliterated across languages: Spanish 'Festo,' French 'Festus,' German 'Festus.'
