Perez, son of Judah and Tamar, ancestor of King David and Jesus Christ
Perez (Hebrew Peretz, meaning "breach") was born to Judah through his daughter-in-law Tamar in one of Genesis' most scandalous narratives (Genesis 38). Despite the irregular circumstances of his conception, Perez became a significant ancestor—the line of David and ultimately of Jesus passed through him. His twin birth involved him breaking through ahead of his brother Zerah, hence the name. Ruth 4:12 invokes his name as a blessing for fruitfulness. The genealogies in Matthew and Luke establish Jesus' legal descent through this crucial link.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Matthew 1:3 appears twice in listing Judah's descendants: "Judah was the father of Perez (Phares) and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez (Phares) was the father of Hezron." Luke 3:33 traces Jesus' lineage back through David to "Hezron, son of Perez (Phares)." The consistent transliteration across languages (Spanish Pharés, French Pharès, German Perez) reflects the Hebrew proper name. Including Perez (and Tamar) in the genealogy is theologically significant—Matthew's inclusion of scandalous ancestors demonstrates that God's grace works through flawed people and irregular circumstances, foreshadowing Jesus' mission to sinners rather than the self-righteous. 3×
