To pretend, feign, play a part; to act hypocritically by concealing one's true motives or character
This middle voice verb originally meant to answer or interpret, then came to mean acting on stage (playing a role), and finally developed the negative sense of pretending or feigning—acting a part to deceive. Luke 20:20 uses it to describe spies sent by Jesus' opponents who 'pretended to be sincere' while actually seeking to trap him. They played a false role, concealing their hostile intent behind a mask of honest inquiry. All translations capture the deceitful, hypocritical nature of this pretense.

Sentidos
1. sense 1 In Luke 20:20, the religious authorities 'sent spies who pretended to be sincere, that they might catch Jesus in something he said.' The participle describes feigning (Spanish 'fingiéndose,' feigning themselves; French 'feindre,' to feign) a character opposite to one's true intentions—these men acted the role of honest seekers while actually being agents provocateurs. The verb's theatrical origin (acting/playing a part) developed into this meaning of hypocritical pretense, wearing a false mask to deceive.
