ὑπόδειγ-μα G5262
An example, pattern, or copy; ranges from a moral model set for imitation or warning to an imperfect earthly representation of a heavenly reality.
This noun carries a double force in the New Testament. On one hand it denotes an example or model held up for imitation or caution — Christ washing the disciples' feet as a pattern of humble service (John 13:15), the prophets as examples of patient endurance (Jas 5:10), or Sodom and Gomorrah as a warning example of divine judgment (2 Pet 2:6). On the other hand, Hebrews employs the word for the earthly tabernacle as a mere copy or shadow of the heavenly original (Heb 8:5; 9:23). The shift between these senses is subtle but real: one points forward ('follow this model'), the other points upward ('this is only a sketch of the true').
Senses
1. example, pattern, model — A model, example, or pattern set before someone for imitation or as a warning. Jesus tells the disciples 'I have given you an example' after washing their feet (John 13:15); James points to the prophets as examples of patience (Jas 5:10); and the writer of Hebrews warns against falling 'after the same example of disobedience' (Heb 4:11). Spanish 'ejemplo' and German 'Vorbild' (role model) underscore the didactic, exemplary force. 4×

2. copy, representation, figure — A copy, sketch, or imperfect representation of a higher, heavenly reality. Used exclusively in Hebrews for the earthly tabernacle as a derivative image of the true sanctuary in heaven (Heb 8:5; 9:23). The earthly form serves and shadows the original, not the reverse. English 'copy/copies' and Spanish 'copias' / 'en modelo' capture the subordinate, imitative character of this sense. 2×
