Tyrians, inhabitants of the city of Tyre
Acts 12:20 describes Herod's deadly conflict with the people of Tyre and Sidon, called Tyrians here. These were residents of the ancient Phoenician coastal cities, commercially important and historically connected to Israel (from Solomon's time onward). The dispute apparently involved trade or food supplies, forcing the Tyrians to seek peace because their region depended on Herod's territory for grain. The incident reveals the economic interdependence of Mediterranean regions and sets the stage for Herod's dramatic death following his acceptance of divine honors.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Luke's narrative identifies the people of Tyre in their dispute with Herod Agrippa I. The multilingual glosses—Spanish 'con Tyrioi', French 'Tyrien', German preserving the Greek—designate the inhabitants of Tyre. The Phoenician cities had long commercial relationships with Jewish territories, sometimes friendly (as with Solomon and Hiram) and sometimes hostile. This particular conflict over food supplies shows the practical dependencies that shaped political relationships in the ancient world. The Tyrians' need for peace with Herod made them vulnerable to his arrogance, which ultimately brought divine judgment. 1×
