1. eat, chew, munch — To eat or chew food, with a vivid or physical connotation that distinguishes it from the more general 'esthio.' All six NT occurrences appear as present active participles describing the act of eating. Cross-linguistic translations are consistent: Spanish 'que-mastica/come/comiendo,' Hindi 'khane-vala/khate-hue,' Arabic 'yakulu/yakulunani,' Korean 'meongneun-ja/meokgo,' Swahili 'anayekula/na.' The two original clusters differ only in number (singular NMS vs plural NMP participle), both carrying the same meaning of actively eating. Used especially in John 6 and 13, where Jesus speaks of eating his flesh and identifies the betrayer as the one eating with him. 6×
