interest, profit from loaned money
Though the Greek word originally meant childbirth or offspring, by the Hellenistic period it had developed the financial meaning of interest on money. The metaphorical connection lies in the idea of money 'giving birth' to more money. Both Gospel uses appear in the parable of the talents (or minas), where the master rebukes the fearful servant who didn't even deposit the money with bankers to earn interest.

Sentidos
1. sense 1 The semantic shift from 'offspring' (classical τόκος) to 'interest' (financial return) reflects the metaphor of money 'bearing' or 'producing' gain. In the parallel passages Matt 25:27 and Luke 19:23, the master chides the unproductive servant who should have at least earned interest (τόκος) by banking the entrusted funds, making the parable's point about minimal expected stewardship.
