Timothy — Paul's most trusted co-worker and spiritual son, recipient of two pastoral epistles
Timotheos (Timothy, 'one who honors God') is Paul's closest and most frequently mentioned ministry partner, appearing 24 times by name in the New Testament. A native of Lystra with a Jewish mother (Eunice) and a Greek father, Timothy was personally recruited by Paul during the second missionary journey and circumcised to remove a barrier to Jewish ministry (Acts 16:1-3). From that point he became Paul's constant representative, sent on sensitive missions to Thessalonica (1 Thess 3:2, 6), Corinth (1 Cor 4:17; 16:10), Philippi (Phil 2:19-23), and Ephesus (1 Tim 1:3). Paul calls him 'my beloved and faithful child in the Lord' (1 Cor 4:17) and 'my true child in the faith' (1 Tim 1:2). Timothy is named as co-sender in six Pauline letters (2 Corinthians, Philippians, Colossians, 1-2 Thessalonians, Philemon), and two epistles — 1 and 2 Timothy — are addressed directly to him with instructions for church leadership. Hebrews 13:23 notes his release from imprisonment. Spanish 'Timoteo,' French 'Timothee,' and German 'Timotheus' preserve the Greek form.

Senses
1. Timotheos The proper name of Paul's most trusted co-worker and delegate, from Greek Timotheos ('honoring God'). Recruited at Lystra as a young disciple of mixed Jewish-Greek parentage (Acts 16:1-3), he became Paul's foremost emissary to troubled churches (1 Thess 3:2; 1 Cor 4:17; Phil 2:19-23). Co-sender of six Pauline letters (2 Cor 1:1; Phil 1:1; Col 1:1; 1 Thess 1:1; 2 Thess 1:1; Phlm 1:1), addressee of two Pastoral Epistles (1 Tim 1:2; 2 Tim 1:2), and mentioned in Hebrews 13:23 regarding his release. Paul's affection — 'my beloved child' (1 Cor 4:17), 'like a son with a father' (Phil 2:22) — is unmatched among his associates. Spanish 'Timoteo,' French 'Timothee.' 24×
