Τιβεριάς G5085
Tiberias, a city on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, named after Emperor Tiberius
Founded around AD 20 by Herod Antipas and named to honor the Roman emperor, Tiberias became one of the major cities on the Sea of Galilee. Built over a cemetery, it was considered unclean by observant Jews, which may explain why Jesus apparently never visited it despite his extensive Galilean ministry. The lake itself came to be called the Sea of Tiberias (John 6:1, 21:1), reflecting the city's prominence. Today it remains an important city in northern Israel.
Senses
1. sense 1 — All three occurrences appear in John's Gospel. John 6:1 identifies the Sea of Galilee as "the Sea of Tiberias," providing a geographic marker for Gentile readers. John 6:23 mentions boats from Tiberias coming to the site of the feeding of the five thousand. John 21:1 again uses "Sea of Tiberias" to locate the resurrection appearance where Jesus reinstates Peter. The genitive form (of Tiberias) links the famous lake to this Roman-era city. The multilingual glosses maintain the transliteration with minor phonetic variations: Spanish Tiberiás/Tiberiádos, French Tibériade, showing the name's stability across languages. 3×
