Tetrarca; gobernante regional bajo autoridad romana, de rango inferior a rey, que regía la cuarta parte de un territorio.
Derivado del griego 'gobernante de una cuarta parte', este título designaba a un gobernador provincial bajo autoridad romana con rango inferior al de rey. En el Nuevo Testamento se refiere exclusivamente a gobernantes de Palestina, sobre todo Herodes Antipas. El español 'tetrarca' y el francés 'tétrarque' conservan la forma griega prácticamente intacta, lo cual refleja cómo este título político técnico pasó directamente a las lenguas occidentales. Lucas 3:19 y Hechos 13:1 aplican el término a figuras históricas concretas del sistema de estados vasallos romanos.
