Adv  |  3× in 1 sense
almost, nearly; approaching closely to but not quite reaching a particular state or number
An adverb meaning almost, nearly, or close to—approaching but not quite reaching. Luke uses it of 'almost the whole city' gathering to hear Paul (Acts 13:44), Paul's statement that 'almost all of Asia' had seen his persuasive work (19:26), and Hebrews' observation that 'almost everything is purified with blood' under the law (9:22). Classical Greek uses it for spatial nearness, close combat, approaching time, or similarity. The word suggests proximity—just short of complete or total, nearly but not absolutely.

Senses
1. sense 1 Simple uniformity: English 'almost', Spanish 'casi', French 'presque/beinahe', German 'beinahe'. The three NT uses employ 'almost' to indicate near-totality without claiming absolute universality: almost the whole city (Acts 13:44), almost all of Asia (19:26), almost everything (Heb 9:22). The adverb acknowledges exceptions while emphasizing the predominant pattern—blood purification is the rule, with rare exceptions.
