Shechem, ancient city in Samaria and son of Hamor
This indeclinable Hebrew name (Shekem) appears in Stephen's speech in Acts 7. It refers both to the son of Hamor from Genesis 34 and to the ancient city of Shechem in Samaria, a significant location in patriarchal history. Abraham built an altar there, Jacob bought land, and Joseph's bones were eventually buried there. Stephen's rehearsal of salvation history includes this place twice in verse 16.
