syngenēs -- relative, kinsman; a person connected by blood or family lineage
The adjective syngenēs ('of the same family'), used substantively as 'relative' or 'kinsman,' denotes a person joined to another by blood or lineage. Elizabeth is called Mary's syngenēs (Luke 1:36), and relatives rejoice at John the Baptist's birth (Luke 1:58). Jesus observes that 'a prophet is not without honor except among his own relatives' (Mark 6:4). Paul stretches the term toward ethnic kinship when he speaks of his 'kinsmen according to the flesh' (Rom 9:3) and greets fellow Jewish believers as 'my kinsmen' (Rom 16:7, 11, 21). Cornelius gathers his relatives before Peter's arrival (Acts 10:24). Whether the bond is immediate family or extended ethnic lineage, the underlying sense remains one of shared descent. Spanish pariente, French parent, and German Verwandte treat all occurrences identically.

Senses
1. relative, kinsman A blood relative or kinsman, covering immediate family ties (Elizabeth and Mary, Luke 1:36), the circle of relatives at a birth (Luke 1:58), and broader ethnic kinship (Paul's 'kinsmen according to the flesh,' Rom 9:3; 16:7, 11, 21). Spanish pariente, French parent, and German Verwandte confirm a single familial sense across all contexts. 12×
