robe, long garment
1. robe, long garment A long, flowing outer garment (στολή), typically a formal or ceremonial robe, used in both singular ('a robe') and plural ('robes') forms. In the NT this includes the white robes of the heavenly redeemed (Revelation 6:11, 7:9, 7:13-14), the robe placed on the returning prodigal son (Mark 16:5), and the long robes worn ostentatiously by scribes (Mark 12:38, Luke 20:46). Multilingual evidence is consistent across number: Arabic رِداء/حُلَل (ridāʾ/ḥulal, 'robe/fine garments') and ثياب (thiyāb, 'garments'), Korean 옷/옷들 (ot/otdeul), Swahili joho/majoho ('cloak/cloaks') and vazi/mavazi ('garment/garments'), Hindi वस्त्र/वस्त्रों (vastra/vastroṃ) and चोगा (chogā, 'robe'), Spanish vestidura/túnicas. Singular and plural are grammatical inflection of one sense.
